In partnership with the County of Simcoe, the Township of Severn is pleased to offer free mulch and compost from May 19 to 25, while supplies last. Bring your own shovel and containers.

Residents are fully responsible for the maintenance and safe operation of their vehicles and trailers, including compliance with the allowable carrying capacities. The County of Simcoe makes no representation or warranty as to the quality of our products. Mulch and compost are produced directly from material collected curbside, or dropped off by County residents. Therefore, there is a potential for unintended contaminants in the products.

Compost uses

Lawn top dressing

Apply 2 cm to 3 cm of compost to the surface of your lawn, followed by raking and watering.

Soil amendment

If using compost as a soil amendment, mix at least 2 cm to 5 cm of compost with at least a similar depth of existing soil into your garden. Compost is used as a natural fertilizer and will help retain moisture in your gardens. The minimum organic matter is 35% and the maximum moisture content is 55%.

Mulch uses

Apply mulch to soil surfaces, around trees, paths, flower beds, slopes and erosion prone areas, and as top dressing for flower and vegetable gardens. Mulch is used to:

  • retain soil moisture
  • regulate soil temperature
  • suppress weed growth
  • for aesthetics
